Gave Knoppix another go

Well, I redownloaded the latest Knoppix Live CD release and burned it to CD, and tried to get it running. On the first attempt it had the same reaction as when I tried this past weekend and just froze during bootup. I rebooted and tried again. This time it booted up fine. However while running some apps it froze again. So I rebooted, again, and it locked up during bootup, again. At this point I’m starting to see a pattern. Upon reboot, again, it went in fine. This time I had no problems and was able to take a few screenshots and ftp them over here.

Now I wanted to try booting into Gnome, so I restarted, entered the proper syntax at the bootup screen and everything was looking fine, but when it started X, the screen just went black and never finished booting. At that point I just gave up again.

However, it’s cool to see how sweet a Debian based distro can turn out(when it boots).

If you always wanted to try Linux but don’t want risk wiping out any of your current operating systems, this is a great way to do it. Give it a shot!

Geek Stuff

It’s been a pretty geeked-out weekend for me. Lots of work on the blog, exchanging emails with some visitors, and visiting many other cool blogs has consumed about 90% of my time this weekend. Here’s breakdown of some of my other accomplishments this weekend.

1) Pulled my son around the backyard on his sled this morning. We only got about a 1/2 inch of snow, but he didn’t care. He loved it!

2) Watched the Packers lose, and in such a grand fashion! Yes, I live in Wisconsin and I do not like the Packers. The only time I root for them is when they play the Bears.

3) Burned new Slackware-current ISO and reinstalled my Linux server with it. Some great updates, including PHP 4.3.0

4) Burned the new Knoppix Live CD and gave it a whirl. It wouldn’t boot. It just locks up during boot. The last version worked fine on the machine. Maybe it’s just a bad download. I’ll try again later this week.

5) Downloaded the FreeBSD 5.0RC2 ISO’s. Haven’t done anything with them yet, maybe later this week, I’ll try to install it on a spare computer.

My cable company must hate me, I think I downloaded close to 10 gigs of data this weekend. I also got a complete mirror of the Redhat Phoebe directory.

GEEK ON!!!!

Interesting photos

I’ve added a new section to the site. Yup, it’s a photo album. I thought about writing my own image management code for here, but I opted to just use gallery. I do plan on intergrating it better with the site though in the future.

But while going through my photo archives, looking for pictures to upload, I came across alot of odd stuff I’ve photo’d over the years. Like this for instance. Not too often you see an inflatable jelly bean wearing a cheesehead!

All entries are finally in the database

When I first started this site and blogging, sometime last Feburary, I used to type everything into a file then upload it. Then I think in August I finally wrote a database enhanced blogging tool for this site, which has made entering and editing entries a million times easier.

Today I finally went through the tedious task adding all the static entries in to the database and modifying the date so they reflected the date the entry was actually made.

Next on the list now is to write a search engine for the site and a monthly/weekly archive system.
