Slow Cooker Kalua Pig

Slow Cooker Kalua Pig - Test 3
Serves: 12-14

Ingredients
  • 5-6 pound pork butt roast
  • 1½ tablespoons Hawaiian sea salt (coarse sea salt)
  • 1½ tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring
Instructions
  1. Pierce the pork roast all over with the tip of a sharp knife. Place the roast in a large slow cooker and rub the salt all over the meat. Drizzle the liquid smoke over the meat.
  2. Cover the slow cooker and cook on Low Heat for 16 to 20 hours**, turning the roast over once half-way through the cooking time. Depending on how hot your low setting is on your slow cooker, you may or may not need the full 20 hours. When the meat easily shreds with a fork it is ready.
  3. Remove the meat from the slow cooker and shred with two forks, adding drippings from the slow cooker as needed to moisten the meat.
Notes
Don’t be tempted to add any additional liquid–you don’t need it. The fat in the roast will provide more than enough liquid. For this size of roast, you will need a 6-qt. slow cooker. If you have a smaller slow cooker, use a smaller roast and reduce the amount of the other ingredients accordingly.

Operation Lawn 2015

I moved in to my new place in December of last year. I could not wait for spring to arrive as the previous owners took horrible care of this wonderful yard. Well, spring is here and operation lawn 2015 is under way. I expect it to take me a couple of years to get the lawn completely how I want it as I don’t have the money to simply remove the current turf, level out the top soil, and resod or reseed. I do have to work with what’s there.

I’ll start with some before pictures.

Yes, the Ubiquiti TS-16-CARRIER can be separated into two units

I’m making this post simply because I had this question and could not find a conclusive answer. Here’s the back story.

I have a project where I needed 2 Toughswitches. And I needed the 8 port units as the 5 port switch was too small. However when I went to order the switches, every single seller of them had them listed as ‘back ordered’. I could get the 5 port models or the 16 port models, but those aren’t what I needed. That’s when I had the idea, since their ’16 port’ carrier model is nothing but two 8 port switches in a rack-mountable carrier, can they be taken out of the carrier and used separately? I didn’t want to take a $400 gamble to get one, and find out that they were difficult or impossible to take out of the carrier. Or that maybe that ran a special firmware that required them to work as a pair. The web provided no assistance on this question.

So I started calling some distributors to ask. What I found out right away was that the 8 port switches are back ordered because at this time there are labor issues and ships are not able to get in to port in Los Angeles. Secondly no one was able to specifically answer my question, but believed that what I wanted to do, could be done. So I went ahead and ordered a Ubiquiti TS-16-CARRIER.

I’m hear to say that it can done, and done easily. The face plate can be simply be popped off and the 2 8 port switches slide right on out. At that point, the are completely independent of each other. See photos below.

Add memory to a Lenovo ThinkPad T440p

I recently had a new Lenovo ThinkPad T440p come in for a client and I needed to add an additional 4GB of RAM. I didn’t take any video or even photos of the process, but it was super simple.

Simply flip over the laptop so you’re looking at the bottom. Remove the 2 screws from the upper right and left. Once removed, just slide the entire bottom towards you. You will see a lot of easy to access parts of the laptop. Use the same process to access the hard drive as well.

Security concern with Google Voice?

Yesterday, while I was out of town working at a client, I received a text message from my mom asking if everything was ok. I replied with with, “Yes. Why?”. She told me she just received a call from my phone number, but it wasn’t me. Caller on the other end said he had a note on his car because I hit it and left this number. He was angry and used profanity at her. She hung up on the call, and and that’s when she messaged me.

That started to freak us both out. The only logical way she could have received a call from my number (which is a google voice number) would either be from the physical phone in my house, or access to the google voice app on my phone or tablet. Since I was about an hour away from my house and had possession of my phone, I asked if she could take a drive by my house and make sure was wasn’t broken in to. Her and my dad went over to it and everything was secure.

When I got back home later in the day, I did a complete walk through of the house and nothing was disrupted. I checked the call log on the physical phone and my parents were not dialed from that phone.

So I’ve spent a good amount of time in the evening trying to figure out how this could have happened with no conclusions. I’ll have to change the account password, but the password was changed a few weeks ago, as well as enabling 2 factor authentication. My google voice history does not show any calls at that time. So I’m guessing someone spoofed the number, but how would they know a number that I call frequently?

Either there is a security issue with google voice, or it’s some kind of identity theft and someone has knowledge of this personal information about me. Either way, it’s a bit unsettling.

Installing Unifi v3 on Debian Wheezy

This post is specific to installing the current stable (3.2.1) release of the Unifi controller software on Debian Wheezy.

Edit your sources.list file and add the following line.

deb http://www.ubnt.com/downloads/unifi/distros/deb/debian debian

Add the GPG key

sudo apt-key adv –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv C0A52C50

Update your repos

sudo apt-get update

Install the v3 of Unifi

sudo apt-get install unifi-rapid

Note: If you already have v2 installed, you can simply remove unifi and then install unifi-rapid. That will upgrade your current config (at least it did for me).
