Yay! New windows today.

Today is a big day for us. We’re getting all the windows in our house replaced. Our current windows have got to be the most inefficient windows ever made.

I’ll post some pictures later today of before and after.

Then I can’t wait to see if there’s a major improvement in our energy bill.

UPDATE: Aww nuts! The window guy called this morning and moved the install to Friday.

Thoughts on a new digital camera.

I think the time has come to get a new digital camera, however I’m not sure what would be the best model to get.

I currently have a Kodak DC240 1 megapixel camera that’s suited my needs for the past couple of years. One of my biggest gripes about it is how long I have to wait before I can take a second picture. And that the camera must be held very still or the picture will be a little blurry.

Can anyone tell me if modern digital camera’s suffer any of those issues’s at all?

I was looking at the Olympus Camedia C-4000, which can be found online for more than $100 cheaper than I paid for my Kodak back in the day.

New Redhat Beta – Phoebe

Well, Redhat has released another beta, codenamed phoebe. It doesn’t look a whole lot(any) different than the 8.0 release.

I got it installed and up and running with no issue’s. Happy to report that all my hardware worked the first time. That includes my wheelmouse, soundcard, printer, and video card. That was a pleasant suprise! (Please no comments on how all that stuff can be configured to work after the install, if linux is ever going to appeal to the masses, all that stuff has to work on first boot.) Alright, back to the point. Like I said the interface(Blue-Curve) looks the same as 8.0, no real surprises there.

After looking around a little while I enable a few additional services; httpd, mysql, imap, named, and also switched MTA to postfix and rebooted. And that was it. It never booted up successful again. Basically during the bootup process something goes wierd and the screen just starts scrolling unreadable text very fast.

I took some screenshots but only uploaded one before I rebooted the computer, so the rest I’m just writing off. You can see the one here: http://www.phpmp.com/images/screenshots/phoebe/

I don’t plan to reload it and try again, I’ll just wait for the next beta!

While playing around with the Knoppix Live CD

For starters, the Knoppix Live CD is a Linux distribution based on Debian that runs completely off a cd. No knowledge of installing Linux is necessary. It will not ruin your Windows install either. It’s a great way to try Linux with absolutely no penalties to pay if you hate it. You can see my complete list of screenshots here.

However, while messing around with it, I loaded up Konquerer, KDE’s default web browser and file manager, and point it to this site, and OMG did it look awful. Does Konquerer not support HTML or CSS? Or is my coding just THAT bad! Here’s a screenshot of what it looked like.
